I’m going to warn you ahead of time that this subject made me mad, so if you’re offended by language you should check out another one of my posts.
Conventional wisdom… hell, institutional wisdom, tells us that food containing high levels of saturated fats such as cream, butter, red meat, eggs and cheese are bad for you because they increase the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer.
But guess what? A recent study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tells us that the opposite is true. It found that overweight middle-aged men who ate high levels of saturated fat and low levels of carbohydrate became slimmer and healthier.
Professor Sherif Sultan, a heart specialist, said, “We urgently need to overturn current dietary guidelines. People should not be eating high carbohydrate diets… instead our diets should be largely based on good quality high-fat foods. This will prevent the rising epidemic of Type 2 diabetes and reverse the growing numbers of people suffering weight-related problems.”
Uhmmm…
Excuse me… but what the fuck? Seriously. Nutritionists, government agencies, and the Legion of Smart have told us the opposite for 30 fucking years. As someone who has dealt with my own weight problems, and had plenty of other friends and family struggling with the same thing, we’ve been misled for three fucking decades!
Before you say that this study is an outlier, you need to know that this is just the latest in a rising tide of information that refutes much of what we’ve been taught about a healthy diet for a generation and a half. The chorus against this conventional wisdom has been growing louder, and there are numerous sources, but the information is not getting out fast enough.
The Path Forward
I’m not a nutritionist, so I’m not going to tell you what to do to be healthy. What I will say is that I’ve included an article below about the study I mentioned and there’s a lot of information out there that you should be looking into if you’re not happy with your own health, or weight. It might be a good idea to do some research on your own.
And this is the most important. Challenge conventional wisdom every chance you get.
You must keep an open mind. You must seek opinions that are opposite of your own. You must at least consider that your beliefs are wrong. Drawing a line and believing a certain way, no matter what, is not logical and it’s not scientific… it’s religious.
The worst that’s going to happen is that you will strengthen your own opinions. You might even benefit from discovering something new. And it’s not the end of the world to change your mind.
You might find yourself in a very select group of individuals who are ridiculed for defying conventional wisdom, but will have the last laugh, because you’ll know the truth.
