I woke up early this morning because I wanted some coffee so bad. I’m a coffee snob. I only like the gourmet stuff. I use a French Press to make my coffee, and if I don’t get my cup in the morning (and by cup, I mean 30 ounces), you better stay out of my way. My love for coffee knows no bounds.

Maybe you’re like me and you drink coffee because you like the jolt, or it starts your day right, or it goes so good with cheesecake. But counter to what you may have heard, coffee can actually be good for you.

Before I go on, I want to make sure you know that the stuff they call cappuccino at 7-11, and those sugar-laden coffee bombs from Starbucks obviate the benefits from coffee because they have too much sugar in them.

The scientifically proven health benefits from coffee that I’m about to give you, are for straight black coffee. Anything you add after that could work against you.

Coffee and Diabetes

Numerous studies have shown that coffee is protective against type 2 diabetes. There is an “inverse association” between the amount of coffee you drink and the risk for type 2 diabetes. That means the more coffee you drink the lesser the risk for diabetes.

This effect does not work for decaf coffee, so go full octane for the benefits.

Coffee and Your Heart

In one study, moderate coffee consumption lowered the risk for heart failure by 11%. This may be due to the same factors that lower the risk for diabetes, or it could be the strong anti-oxidant qualities of coffee.

Coffee and Depression

Research from the Harvard School of Public Health shows that women who drank four cups of coffee a day were 20% less likely to suffer from depression.

Coffee and Alzheimer’s

The University of South Florida found evidence that coffee is associated with a reduced risk of dementia or delayed onset. They reported that caffeine and an unidentified component in coffee (and I believe that unidentified component is… love) boost blood levels of a critical growth factor that fights the Alzheimer’s and dementia disease process.

Coffee Can Make You Smarter

Caffeinated coffee blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine. Without that inhibitor, other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine increase, leading to enhanced firing of neurons. That means your brain functions like Lex Luthor… and you don’t even have to shave your head!

Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat

Have you noticed that caffeine is in almost every commercial fat burning supplement? That’s because it’s one of the few natural substances that has been proven to aid in the fat burning process. Coffee can boost your metabolic rate by 10 to 29%!

Coffee may also lower your risk of Parkinson’s disease, have protective effects on the liver, could help you fight cancer, may lower the risk of stroke, aids in pain reduction, and will help you live longer.

I can hear you starting your car and heading out to get a Venti Dark Roast right now, so I’ll wrap this up.

If you don’t like the taste of coffee, or it’s just not your thing, that’s fine. You’re a pajama boy, but… whatever. The point is that when people tell you not to drink coffee because it’s bad for you, tell them to stick that up their candy ass, and get your java fix with no worries!
